Historical photographs of Modderpoort and surrounds from the Society of the Sacred Mission Archives, Borthwick Institute, University of York
The galleries here include a selection of photographs of St Augustine's Mission, Modderpoort, South Africa.
The photographs come from the papers of the Society of the Sacred Mission (SSM) which are housed in the Borthwick Institute for Archives at the University of York.
It is an extensive collection of photographs that document several decades of Modderpoort's history. The photographs are uncatalogued and have never been exhibited before, so we hope that visitors to the site who know or have a connection to Modderpoort will be able to help us with piecing together more of the stories behind each image.
The photos are divided into five sections/categories to show the various aspects of life at St Augustine's mission.
Each gallery contains a selection of thumbnail images. The exact creation date of by far the majority of the photographs is unknown, but information from elsewhere has been used to try and provide an approxmate date of creation. "(?)" indicates a suggested date.
Share your insights, knowledge, stories
Every effort has been made to establish a date for the photographs, to identify the creator, and record the names of the people and places portrayed.
This is an ongoing project.
Can you help us identify the people, places, or events in these photos?
Do you have images or material relating to the SSM and Modderpoort?
As the photographs are currently uncatalogued, and most are without annotations or dates, any information that could help with the task of cataloguing and adding metadata would be highly appreciated.
If you have information to share or spot any missing information and/or errors, please use the form or contact email below. We would love to hear from you!
